2012 Conference

The 2012 Conference will be held in Kansas City MO at Marriott Country Club
July 17- 23 2012
Conference Theme
“Together we can build bridges for better perinatal outcomes around the world.”
CAPPA professionals approach their work with expectant families during the perinatal year with a desire to educate, support, and to see all families succeed. The CAPPA Approach is built on the CAPPA Vision, which supports four cornerstone tenets. These cornerstones are:
-Using evidence-based information in practice
-Embracing positive mental attitudes
-Approaching all situations with a loving, non-judgmental mindset
-Building bridges amongst support and healthcare professionals
How do you become a bridge builder within your community? Common challenges in our communities include:
-How do I support families who are unprepared to parent?
-How do I stress the importance of the first few hours in the breastfeeding relationship?
-How do I set families up for breastfeeding success, by helping them understand the impact of their choices in birth?
-How do I build bridges and remove walls in perinatal care between health care professionals in my community?
-How do I support families with unexpected outcomes and perinatal loss?
-How do I keep up and reach my target audience using today’s technology?
-How do I get parents excited about nutrition and fitness in the perinatal period?
-What can I learn from various cultures to help me support families?
-How do I help parents understand their vaccine rights as well as my own rights as a perinatal professional?
By building bridges, we can connect doulas, educators, nurses, midwives, and doctors, uniting all birth professionals as a team around the world. By understanding and respecting each other we can work together for the betterment of all families.
Are you ready to build a bridge?

Bridging the Nutrition Gap
Its time to set many of the pregnancy myths aside and teach mothers what they really need to know about nutrition in pregnancy. While it is true that a mother is eating for two, most women do not really know what that means. They assume they just eat twice as much. A woman’s nutritional intake has epigenetic outcomes, meaning that what she eats actually changes the genetic expression of her baby. A woman’s diet in pregnancy can change her baby’s palate, cravings and rewards centers of her baby’s brain, risk of diabetes and risk of obesity. Additionally, the typical American foods eaten during pregnancy do very little to nourish the pregnant woman’s body, let alone nourish her baby. Join Laurel to learn about how to counsel mothers on better choices and using conscious agreement to make choices for a vibrant and healthy pregnancy.
Objectives
At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to
o Identify at least 4 important ways to optimize pregnancy through nutrition.
o Describe how to use conscious agreement for positive prenatal nutrition.
o Identify at least one food that benefits a woman during each trimester of pregnancy.
o Identify at least one epigenetic influence from nutrition on the fetus.

Communication and Support: The Bricks and Mortar of Our Bridges
When a mom initially contacts a member of the birth team, it is in her best interest to expose her to others that will guide her through perinatal period. No one single professional or field can meet all the needs of a birthing community, so referrals are paramount to a well-supported birth and postpartum period. It is each person’s individual responsibility to build a network of support by building up other professionals that will serve as pillars. When a strong foundation is laid for our clients we have fulfilled our responsibility and can guarantee safe passage from our area of expertise to the next.
Objectives
By the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:
-Identify the pillars in the birth communities
-Communicate effectively with birth professionals
