CAPPA Conference 2009 - Scottsdale, AZ
Posted on June 22nd, 2009 by Val
If you missed this year's FREE CAPPA Conference in Scottsdale, AZ, you missed a weekend full of great speakers, awesome networking and wonderful vendors. Not to mention the pre-conference training workshops!
Conference time is a great opportunity to bundle up on continuing education and meet with other birth professionals for some fun times as well. From the beginning of registration on Thursday night, right up until Sunday afternoon when everyone is checking out and heading to the airport, you could hear exclamations of birth professionals meeting up again, or putting faces to names for the first time - and of course saying goodbye until next year. There were lots of hugs and laughter and late nights of just hanging out with my "doula girls".
Coming to conference is always an exciting time for everyone, and this year was no exception. The speakers provided a good cross-section of information that pertained to all CAPPA certified professionals, and I felt that I learned a lot of new information that I can use in my work as a doula and educator. The break-out sessions were phenomenal. Attendees at Tracy Wilson Peters' marketing session were given some great information on marketing with the newest social networking websites, and much more. The conference venue itself was at the Ft. McDowell Radisson Resort and Casino in Scottsdale, AZ. Arizona is a beautiful state, and the hotel and conference area were beautiful. It was very nice to sit at the cafe in the outdoor area and just enjoy the breeze while you have a nice meal. And the pool area! Wow! The pool was so beautiful, and there was lots of sun to enjoy in the afternoons after conference time was over.
This year's conference was a blast, and I can't wait until next year! Keep an eye on the website and the CAPPAinfo Yahoo! group for the big announcement for the location for next year's conference! Wherever it is, it will be another great time to learn and network and spend time with other birth professionals. So make plans to attend in 2010!

May is Doula Month!
Posted on May 18th, 2009 by Tracy
Press Release: Lawrenceville, GA
May 17, 2009: May is International Doula Month
Contact: Tracy Wilson Peters, CAPPA Director/Founder at 888-MY-CAPPA
This is the month doulas and the families they work with celebrate the doula profession. There are three types of doulas who provide support for women during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
A labor doula helps expectant women and families prepare for childbirth by providing resources and timely information, and by providing emotional and physical support throughout the birth event. The antepartum doula has extensive training that relates to assisting expectant women who may be on bed-rest and who may or may not be high-risk. Or she can be a postpartum doula and help smooth the transition into parenting by providing continuous support in the first few weeks after delivery by providing assistance with breastfeeding and newborn care, in addition to other types of practical help.
The support of a doula improves the childbirth experience, increases breastfeeding success, improves family bonding, and encourages and strengthens families. CAPPA is a non-profit international training and certifying organization. Founded in 1998 CAPPA's mission is to provide professional membership and training in related women's health fields. These consist of childbirth and lactation educators, antepartum, labor and postpartum doulas, advanced certifications in Teen Support, and Adoption Services and the Advanced Comfort Measures training class. CAPPA has grown to consist of national and international members and three divisions: the parent organization CAPPA, CAPPA Canada and Operation Special Delivery (OSD).
Mother's Day
Posted on May 11th, 2009 by Michelle Schnaars

Mother's Day was created so each family could honor its mother. As childbirth and postpartum professionals we know this day will be filled with joy and excitement for many women because they will welcome the birth of their child. Whether a first child or more we as mothers never forget how special and unique each child is.
This day can also be a two-edged experience for the mom who has lost a child. As some of you reading this know our Director of Operation Special Delivery Mary Beth Nance and her husband Jason lost their son Mason February 11, 2009. The couples first child, Mikaela, died in May 1996. She was stillborn. They also have a daughter, Jennifer, who will be 12 in August. Mason was a lovable seven year old who enjoyed sports and uplifting the spirits of those around him. In honor of Mason's life and his strong desire to help others, a memorial fund, Larger than Life, has been created to help children in the community. The plans for this fund include establishment of a Class of 2019 scholarship based on good character traits, sponsorships for less fortunate children to participate in team sports, camps and music, and hopefully assistance with a new playground at Delta-Peach Bottom Elementary School.
Contributions can be sent to:

In addition to her work as Director of Operation Special Delivery, Mary Beth is an active labor doula working in Northeastern, Maryland, helping close to 100 women achieve a rewarding labor and birth experience.
While writing this I realized I wanted to be able to share with our readers some of my own personal thoughts about Mary Beth. I've known her for about three years now, and over this time have come to see she is a good-natured person who truly wants the best for people. She is a good listener who is able to uplift and encourage those around her. Mary Beth is the kind of person you want to be around.
Mary Beth has touched so many people in a real and positive way that none of us can forget. All of her friends know she likes quotes, and one of her favorites is, "They may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel."
I wanted you to be able to hear from one of her dearest friends. Here is what Wendi wanted to share:
"I met Mary Beth about 6 years ago through what some would consider a random email about being a doula. But she and I both know it was not by chance. We quickly realized that our birth philosophies were very similar and became partners as she pursued her doula certification. Even greater than that we became the best of friends. I was honored to watch this amazing wife, mother and doula share herself with so many birthing families over the course of our partnership. Her unbelievable ability to organize still impresses me; and how she effectively keeps it all together is inspiring! I always tell her I want to be like her when I grow up. Mary Beth has been by my side through many of my life's difficult times. Never judgmental or critical, she always has just the right words, hugs or homemade apple butter and biscuits to get me through. No matter what plates she had spinning in the air at the moment she always had time for my drama. Our friendship has been one of fierce loyalty and woven by an unexplained bond. A year ago, I had to move from MD to GA. Leaving Mary Beth and her family was devastating to me. We missed each other terribly but talked and emailed as much as our busy schedules would allow. It was not as if we actually saw each other any less by my move, but we no longer had the option of stealing away for a cup of coffee should an opportunity arise. When her son Mason was recuperating from a routine surgery, I remember talking with Mary Beth and hearing, probably the first time ever, her strength and energy dissolving. I hung up the phone that day and cried. I was not able to be there for my dearest friend when she needed me most. I resolved to find a way to lighten her load. I called their local pizza place (Mason's favorite) and arranged to have a gift card delivered that she could use for dinner one night. She and Mason sent me the best thank you note which took its special place on my fridge right along side their family picture. I tell you all of this because the bonds of our friendship transcended time and distance, and on February 11, 2009 tragically Mason Noah Carter Nance, beloved son of Jason and Mary Beth, left this earth. The pain I felt in my soul cannot be explained. I just KNEW without a doubt that she needed me. I never spoke to Mary Beth that nigh, or the next day. I just made arrangements to fly to Maryland. I didn't need to talk to her or tell her of my plans. In her heart, she already knew. When I arrived on her doorstep she fell into my arms and we cried. Then we sat for the next 12 hours as she retold the events surrounding Mason's death. What I began to realize was that SHE was consoling ME! And this is the best part - her faith in God was her strength. It was probably at this moment that we confirmed our belief that our connection really wasn't by chance. You see, I have no doubt that I was meant to witness this remarkable woman suffer the loss of not one, but 2 children, and still find a way to get out of bed every day. And in witnessing this, I decided I wanted what she has - faith. God really does work in mysterious ways. And I thank him every day for the blessing of Mary Beth in my life!! -Wendi Quintal
Mary Beth and her family are the kind of people who strive to make a difference in this world. They are loving and encouraging the people in their lives every day. All of us at CAPPA and OSD love and adore Mary Beth. She is a real gem and we are blessed to call her a friend.
This Mother's Day, let the women in your life know how special they are to you. Whether it's your mom, sister, daughter or friend, don't miss this opportunity to tell them you love them.

Conference Attendance - On a Budget!
Posted on April 8th, 2009 by Val
You hear it on the news every day - the economy is in serious trouble. Jobs are at risk, prices are high, and everyone is afraid.
But continuing education is not a luxury, it is a necessity. There are many opportunities for continuing education being offered by many organizations, and many of those offerings have high prices attached. A lot of organizations offer conferences and conventions with contact hours, but they also charge a pretty penny for attendance, and that doesn't include travel and accommodations. Then on top of that, they want to charge you for CEUs! WHAT?!?
Imagine attending a conference at your favorite birth organization absolutely free! Even better, imagine not having to pay extra CEU fees for those hard-earned contact hours for continuing education in your field. Then think about taking your family vacation that you save for every year in a great location with lots of family activities nearby, including The Grand Canyon! Talk about your two birds with one stone, right? Is this a dream? NO! The CAPPA Childbirth Conference and Convention is the answer! CAPPA's Childbirth Conference is being held in Scottsdale, Arizona on June 11-14, 2009. We at CAPPA understand that during this time of concern for the economy, everyone is trying to tighten their belt and be more responsible with their finances. This is why we do our very best every year to bring the highest quality speakers, presenters and vendors to our free conference.
We also wanted to give you a few tips to help you attend conference in the most economical way possible. Here are some suggestions that might help:
- Join the CAPPAinfo@yahoogroups.com list to recruit roommates to reduce accommodation costs. Just send an email with the subject "subscribe" to CAPPAinfo-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. A lot of people start posting roommate requests in the few months before conference. The CAPPA room rate is $119 a night, and splitting that with one or more roommates can really cut down on your hotel expense!
- Visit several different travel websites such as Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, Priceline.com, or Cheaptickets.com to search for airline tickets. You can even put in your travel details and have these sites email you when the price drops below a certain amount. Most of these sites also have a price guarantee that if the price drops, they will give you the difference. I just booked my flight from Atlanta for a wee bit over $200 to Phoenix. This is less than most "other" birth organizations charge just to ATTEND their conference.
- If you're close enough to drive, find a carpool buddy to split the gas costs. Often your carpool buddy can also split your hotel room as well. BONUS!
- Be sure to check out the optional break-out sessions scheduled in the afternoons. These low-cost options give you more bang for your CEU buck. For $20-25, you can attend a break-out session with Barbara Harper, Desirre Andrews, or Tracy Wilson Peters. You won't find extra sessions anywhere else for such a bargain!
- Read a new birth book or blog. This can be accomplished by taking a book along to baseball practices or to the pool, or by having a quiet reading time in the cool air conditioning during the hottest part of the day.
- Meet with other local birth professionals for lunch…even a picnic lunch at the park with all of the kids!
- Take a notebook wherever you go to make the most of the "waiting" moments. Use it to journal, plan, and dream!
- Do something to pamper yourself. You'd be surprised how many birth stories you will get to hear during a pedicure when the other ladies find out you are a birth professional.
- Go ahead a take a breather! Take a month to recharge. No clients, no classes… just family time!
- If you are planning a family vacation, contact CAPPA members in the area where you will be traveling and get together for coffee.
- And, of course, attend the CAPPA conference! There is no better way to refresh, refocus, and connect with others who love what you do!
- Share a room. This will help reduce the conference room-rate even more.
- If you are planning on driving, drive with another conference attendee and share the expense of gas.

One Voice

For Immediate Release
Atlanta, Georgia - February, 2, 2009 - Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association is pleased to announce that The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) has selected CAPPA's One Voice concept for their upcoming forum in March 2009.
CAPPA's Project One Voice is an ongoing project. On February 14th, 2004 CAPPA united over 300 concerned citizens and women's health care organizations for one day of nationwide awareness rallies that focused on the rising cesarean rate, lack of VBAC options and women's rights to informed consent. CAPPA chose February 14th to signify that women should be surrounded by people they love during birth and to make a statement that childbirth is a significant life event, not a medical event. Awareness rallies were held in over 20 cities nationwide and the events were coved by the media in each city.
The history of CAPPA's One Voice event that took place in 2004 is archived in a living document located on the CAPPA website. CAPPA also produced a video entitled One Voice which has gained international praise from childbirth professionals world wide. That video is also available to view on the CAPPA web site.
CAPPA plans to hold future One Voice events and those events will be posted on the CAPPA website at cappa.net/pov.php.
Please join CAPPA in ONE VOICE as we recognize the 5th anniversary of the first One Voice project that took place five years ago on February 14th, 2004!
Happy New Year, CAPPA Members!
Posted on January 6th, 2009 by Tracy
I hope all of you enjoyed the holidays!
2008 was such a wonderful year for CAPPA. We made-over our website, added CAPPA Radio, added Ask the Pros, created Facebook and Twitter accounts, added new items in the CAPPA shop, added hundreds of new CAPPA members, and celebrated our 10th birthday in Dallas, Texas at our 2008 conference!
With all that behind us, can you imagine what is in front of us for 2009?! For starters, we are adding new Parent Resources pages to the site. We will be adding new interactive discussion forums, we will be adding new faculty members across the USA, updating and improving our CAPPA online store, and hosting our annual free CAPPA Childbirth Conference and Convention, June 11-14th, 2009 in Scottsdale, AZ! (Sponsored by StorkVision and Cord Blood Registry!)
Look for more information soon from CAPPA on these new features and please make plans now to be with us in Arizona for the convention. I personally will be making the trip to the Grand Canyon since it is just a short drive from the conference site! I look forward to all that 2009 will bring to CAPPA! As always, we look forward to serving your professional needs and growing together!
I came across the quote below and printed it for my office. I always encourage you to keep positive words in your presence - they are words to live by!
"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours." - Henry David Thoreau
Make it a GREAT 2009!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Posted on November 18th, 2008 by Tracy
Happy Thanksgiving, CAPPA members!
I hope that you are all preparing to enjoy the holidays with your loved ones. We will be closing the CAPPA office the 26th-30th to allow our staff to spend time with their families. Of course, when we open again it will be back to business as usual. Look for a very special holiday sale to start on December 2nd! Check the website for details.
As the holidays inch ever closer, I know most of you will be focused on family, gift buying and giving, and all of your holiday traditions! We wish you much love and happiness during this time of celebration and hope that each and every one of you know how much CAPPA appreciates your on-going support and friendship.
I think about how many of you will be at births as doulas to welcome Thanksgiving babies and babies born all through the holiday season. I know just three years ago, I had the privilege of being with one of my clients as she gave birth on Thanksgiving day. My family actually brought me a Thanksgiving plate to the hospital, complete with mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie. (I don't eat turkey!)
The cool thing about that birth was that I was also with this very same mother 11 years prior as she gave birth to her first child. So we all got to be very thankful together: the mother, the son, the new baby daughter and the doula Tracy!
Here is a picture of me with Julie, the mom I was with on that very special Thanksgiving day 3 years ago! Yes, you guessed it - it was taken from my cell phone. Doesn't she look great for being in transition?!
As doulas, we often give up time with family to follow our other passion and calling. We are women of birth. And only we know what that means...
Happy Thanksgiving, my CAPPA friends. I wish you yummy pumpkin pie!

An open letter to all CAPPA members from Tracy Wilson Peters and Donna M. Johnson
Posted on October 9th, 2008 by Tracy
Dear CAPPA Member,

As many of you know, over the last year or so Donna Johnson (CAPPA Co-Executive Director) has been pursuing a career with Aflac Insurance Company. The great news is that this Aflac has been a tremendous success for Donna! Donna is now working full time with her family in a job that she very much loves.
As you all know, Donna also loves CAPPA. Over the last few months we have been discussing how we can best handle this new change for Donna while making sure CAPPA is also taken care of. We have come to an agreement in the last few weeks that we are both happy with. Donna has decided to take a different role in CAPPA that will allow her to work her full time job at Aflac, but to remain on the CAPPA staff on a part time basis.
Effective immediately, Donna will become CAPPA's CFO and her main responsibility will be handling CAPPA's accounting and conference budget. Tracy will remain on as Executive Director and will work full time in the CAPPA office. We are confident that this change is best for CAPPA, as well as Donna and her family. We are very proud of what we have built in CAPPA to this point and that our ten year long partnership has been so successful. We of course remain very close friends and will both continue to work with the best interest of CAPPA's long term success in mind at all times.
Any time there is a change such as we have described amongst an organization's leadership, there is bound to be speculation and/or questions as to what brought on the change. We want to assure our CAPPA members that in this case, both Tracy and Donna are still great friends as well as co-workers who hold great respect and adoration for each other. We have both accepted the terms of our new working arrangement with confidence that the right decisions have been made.
What will these changes mean for you as CAPPA members? There should be no difference in the service that you receive as a CAPPA member. The changes that we are making in the CAPPA office will not change your CAPPA membership or certifications. This is really a behind the scenes change that mainly affects the CAPPA staff. Our staff has been informed of these changes and understand how the CAPPA team will integrate the changes. Please be assured that you will continue to receive the same high level of service that you have come to expect as a CAPPA member.
Donna will still attend conferences and be part of the leadership team. Donna will no longer hold CAPPA trainings at this time, but may elect to train again one day when her time permits.
We hope this letter explains the changes that will be taking place and that you will all be happy for Donna and her new career.
If you have any questions please let us know - we are an open book. Questions can be sent to info@cappa.net.
And if you know anyone who needs insurance, we can recommend a great agent!
Sincerely,
Tracy Wilson Peters; CAPPA Executive Director
Donna M. Johnson; CAPPA CFO
Money, money, money!
Posted on September 19th, 2008 by Tracy
Have you seen the news lately? Everything and everyone is being affected by inflation and the economy! CAPPA is no exception! We have seen a slow down in renewals, conference attendance and even recertifications. We know the economy is affecting all of us!
What can we do? As an organization, we depend on your renewals to keep our office functioning and you must renew in order to keep your certifications current. You may think this would be a time for CAPPA to increase membership dues, certification fees, store prices, etc. But we know that would not serve the best interest of our members. This is a hard time for all of us.
The CAPPA leadership team is taking a bold step to help ensure that CAPPA members get a break. We are making a promise to you that we will not increase our fees through all of 2009! In fact, as you may or may not know, CAPPA has only increased membership dues one time in ten years and only by five dollars! CAPPA has the lowest membership fee among the 4 big childbirth organizations, and of course we are the only organization to give our members FREE tuition to our annual conference, which helps you obtain those vital CEUs at a low cost! We are proud to say that this is one more way we are serving CAPPA members, especially now during these hard times.
If you are not a CAPPA member and you are certified through another organization, this might be a great time to look into CAPPA's transfer programs. We recognize many trainings from other organizations - you may be able to get credit or even certification through CAPPA based on your previous training. Contact info@cappa.net for details.
Please be sure to keep your membership current (a requirement if you hold CAPPA certifications) and make sure you turn in your recertifications on time so that no penalties will apply.
We hope that by keeping your membership and certification dues low it will be of some help to you and your family at this time.
Til next time,
TWP aka Tracy Wilson Peters
Conference Time!
Posted on August 8th, 2008 by Tracy
Can you believe it's only two weeks til the BIG event?! Yes, that's right - the CAPPA conference is just two weeks away! I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve! How lucky am I? I love my job with all my heart. I love the team that I work with and the work we all do! I start thinking of all of you that I will see at conference and how much fun we will have! I start thinking about all the hugs and smiles and laughs! I have been working on a couple of my presentations that I am giving at the conference and preparing for CAPPA's 10 Year Birthday Party! I cannot wait to see you all again. For those of you who won't be with us, you will be missed and we will hope to see you in 2009 at the CAPPA Conference in Arizona! This year I am more excited than I have ever been. So many good things are happening! Thinking about spending 4 days with my CAPPA Team and CAPPA members is so exciting! Oh, and by the way ladies - better bring your dancing shoes because we are gonna party! If you have not signed up yet, you can still do so!
Til then,
TWP aka Tracy Wilson Peters
Setting Goals
Posted on July 11th, 2008 by Michelle Schnaars
Each year we resolve to make lasting changes. Often we do not accomplish the goals we set. We certainly realize the benefits of these changes, but it can be difficult to make them. Changing our habits requires constant effort until a new habit is formed. Remembering that change is a process can help us in achieving our goals. Set realistic goals, and aim to meet them once a week or month. Align your goals with rewards. The accomplishment of our goals is definitely rewarding - however, providing extra rewards can help you remain focused and motivated. Enlisting support is an effective way to reach goals. Work alongside your sister CAPPA member, family or friend to achieve each step.
CAPPA knows what it takes to make positive lasting changes. The Leadership Board realized its goals for this year, including updating our website. (Thanks to our webmaster Kacy Tittle for a job well done!) Our new appearance is beautiful, easy to navigate, and all the information you need is just a click away. We added new features to our site too, including CAPPA Radio, CAPPA Blog, and Ask the Pros. These new additions offer our members more ways to remain in touch with CAPPA, and to stay up-to-date on news and events. Ask the Pros is our new segment that lets you ask business questions of our 'pro' Janice Banther. If you have a question about taxes, gasoline, contracts, or balancing personal and professional life, ask the pro and she will help you figure things out.
The 9th Annual Conference is coming up August 21-24, 2008, in Dallas, Texas, thanks to April Howton, our Marketing Director, and the Conference Team: Sarah Coleman, Carrie Bryant, Sharon Dehart, Kay Smith and Janice Banther. That is a big job, and these ladies always do a great job of securing a beautiful hotel and booking the best speakers and vendors. The conference is always jam-packed with trainings, breakout sessions, and CEU opportunities.
The CAPPA Quarterly has also undergone changes, including a new appearance and online accessibility. Plus, we now award continuing education units for published articles in the Quarterly.
By setting goals, we work toward a desired behavior, object, or higher learning. Consider CAPPA training workshops, CEU opportunities, and the Annual CAPPA Conference when you set your goals for the remainder of 2008, and for 2009.
The CAPPA Leadership Board is here to help you along the way. We are proud of the goals you reach, and successes you experience. Please email us if we can be of service to you.
Make 2008 great, and start 2009 with a positive beginning!

In The Good Ole Summertime
Posted on June 14th, 2008 by Kay Smith
The sights and sounds of summer are all around us. Splashing, giggling children, popsicles melting down their arms. Baseball games with hot dogs for dinner. Watermelon seed spittin' contests. Hot days and hot nights. Sippin' sweet tea, swattin' flies, and catchin' fireflies in a jar. Summer is a lazy time, usually for everyone but mom, who finds herself in a flurry of activity.
So, how does a birth professional find time to do what she loves, without neglecting who she loves? You might consider some of the following options to get refreshed and refocused in the birth field during the summer months:
May your summer be filled with sunshine and laughter!

Rising Gas Prices: What's a Professional to Do?
Posted on May 27th, 2008 by Donna Johnson
With gas prices rising, and the necessity of gaining CEUs, what is a professional to do? Many professionals work within a tight budget and the increase in gas prices makes it difficult for us to travel from one place to the next and gain our much needed CEUs.
The CAPPA conference can provide what you need for the best price! The conference is the one place for all your certifying and continuing educational needs. Because the CAPPA conference is FREE!
I suggest planning ahead. By purchasing my airline ticket I have already saved money - $238.00. Wow! Here are some more money saving tips:
The CAPPA conference provides a great weekend of networking, learning and fun. Most of our conference is free, and most of the sessions with fees include a meal. You can't beat that!
The CAPPA conference is the highlight of the year. We get the same members back year after year. Remember to register early to secure your room, and the CAPPA discount room-rate. Seats are first come, first serve, and this year will be full capacity, so reserve your spot now.
This is the best deal around. We look forward to seeing you there!

Blog from Sarah Lynn Coleman
Posted on April 7th, 2008 by Sarah Lynn Coleman
As I have been preparing to teach a CAPPA Childbirth Educator training in Ohio next week, I have been reviewing the material I am going to be teaching, and I was reminded again of what a powerful gift we give and receive as educators.
As educators, we are in a position to influence decisions that our clients make which will have huge impact on their future parenting skills. For example, when a couple is taught to use comfort measures in order to cope with pain during labor, we teach them to look for other answers and to try several things before giving up. That same lesson will come to mind when they seek to soothe their crying infant in the middle of the night in a few short months. Again, that very same lesson will come to mind when/if they have difficulty breastfeeding their infant, and can’t seem to make it work.
As educators, we teach parents to make informed decisions. We spend hours teaching material and coming up with really creative ways to hit our point home. We have families come in and share their stories, hoping to make an impact. We prepare handouts, research topics, evaluate and make changes where they are necessary. We go to continuing education seminars and workshops seeking materials that will help parents see all of the choices that are before them. Every step that we take to prepare our materials brings us one step closer to helping those parents make the informed decisions when the time comes.
I am so glad that I have an opportunity to not only teach future parents, but to teach the future teachers of parents as well. Every woman I have ever trained has had a unique impact on me as an educator. I have grown as a teacher because of my students and their experiences. They give me the gift of learning as well. I have learned to see people in their own unique light, and appreciate the talents that they bring to the training. I have learned to see the information that I teach in new ways. I understand Cesareans a little better, though I have not had one. I have had so many women share their stories and I can recognize the need for appropriate intervention. I have been given the special gift to know that everything is not all black and white. There are gray areas in childbirth, breastfeeding and parenting. You have to learn what works best for you.
I thank the women I have worked with during my past 8 years with CAPPA. You have helped me become a better educator as a result of our experiences.

The Roots of a Woman
Posted on March 13th, 2008 by Tracy
Examine the picture of the tree. Notice that in this picture the viewer is given a glimpse of what is below the surface of the tree. In life, we are not given this opportunity. When we meet a woman we only see what has emerged and grown as a result of what is underneath the surface; upon first meeting someone we do not get a glimpse of her roots. Some women are strong, confident, courageous and accomplished while others that we encounter are fearful, weak-minded, full of self-doubt... and they have doubt in the world.
A woman's roots have been growing since before she was born. Every experience in her life has affected her growth and has contributed to the woman she has become, and is still becoming. All of us are the result of our entire life experiences, which make up our roots. Some trees have deep roots that are strong and healthy that stretch far. Other trees are weak and have been deprived of support and sustenance that is vital in order to grow and sustain a strong healthy tree.
As women our roots are a lot like those of the tree. Growth and strength is often the result when we branch out and expand into new directions. Yet when we stay close to what is comfortable our growth is often inhibited since the environment immediately around us only holds a limited number of growth stimulating opportunities. This results in roots that are shallow because our experiences have been limited.
When we have deep and far reaching roots we are less likely to be uprooted when storms hit our lives. Our roots anchor us and hold us, and our foundation is strong. The good and bad experiences that we have had in our lives have helped us to grow and become strong. There may have been a time when we branched off in one direction only to realize it was not the right direction for us. We learned to bend rather than break.
Environmental factors can affect the growth of a woman as well. Like the tree, we have no control of where we are planted and where we came from. The things that happen around us and to us are often out of our control. Unlike trees, adult humans have free will and, more importantly, legs that allow us to get up and move if our environment becomes one that hinders our growth. We can draw from our life experiences to help us in our decision making and choose appropriately in different situations. It takes courage to branch off from the familiar. But it is only when we do that we fully grow and fully absorb everything this world has waiting for us. When we expand our roots, when we grow beneath the surface, those experiences enrich us and nurture us as women, as mothers, and as humans.

New happenings
Posted on February 19th, 2008 by Tracy
Greetings! Here in Atlanta, we are finally starting to see the signs of spring! I know as I write this many of our members are still enduring the cold, but have hope spring is not far off for you either! Spring is my favorite time of the year. For one thing, I welcome the warm weather and I love soaking up the sun! I also love the beauty of spring, the new little leaves on the trees, the smell of flowers and the feel of new life emerging!
This spring is especially exciting for CAPPA. We have made, and are in the process of making, several improvements. CAPPA members are already enjoying our new and improved website and our new MySpace page.
In addition to those changes, we are also working hard to do our part to preserve our environment. You probably have been hearing more and more everyday in the media about the importance of conservation and taking care of our home here on Earth. At CAPPA, we are doing our part to conserve and taking steps to "go green" as well. One way we are doing this is by going online with the CAPPA Quarterly. This improvement is earth friendly, but also CAPPA member friendly. You will now be able to view the CAPPA Quarterly online here and also access back issues at the convenience of any computer. No more searching the house wondering what happened to that article and which issue was that in. From now on you can log onto the CAPPA website and read the current issue and back issues from anywhere you have internet access.
The Quarterly going digital is one of many changes you will be seeing CAPPA make. We have also just redesigned and printed the new CAPPA brochure and this time it is on recycled paper. We feel good about these changes and want you as CAPPA members to know you are part of an organization that is environmentally conscious.
We know we must change and grow as technology is constantly changing, and we are not through making changes to our website. Over the next several months you will be noticing many new added features that we are sure you will enjoy. Don't forget to register now to be with us in Dallas, Texas, August 21-24th 2008 for our awesome conference and our BIG Ten Year Birthday Bash! Seats are limited and are already filling fast.
Until next time, happy birthing!

That's right, CAPPA turns 10 years old this year! To celebrate this milestone we have given CAPPA's website a complete makeover. We hope you will take time to look around the new site.
We have launched the CAPPA MySpace page as a way to encourage networking among our members, you can see and join the new CAPPA MySpace site here. MySpace is free and many of our members are already enjoying networking there.
